Get started with your Ledger device

A concise, secure walkthrough to initialize your Ledger hardware wallet and Ledger Live companion app.

Overview

This page guides you through the essential steps: install Ledger Live, initialize your device, back up your recovery phrase, and add accounts. Follow each step carefully — hardware wallets protect your private keys by keeping them offline. If you already own a device, make sure the box is sealed and never follow setup instructions from unknown links or emails.

Download Ledger Live

Visit the official Ledger website and download Ledger Live for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux) or mobile (iOS, Android).

  • Prefer the desktop version for full features.
  • Always verify you are on the official domain before downloading.

Open Ledger Live & Connect

Launch Ledger Live and follow the prompts to select your device model. Connect the Ledger device using the provided USB cable and power it on.

  • Choose Set up as new device unless restoring.
  • Set a secure PIN — this protects physical access to your device.

Backup your recovery phrase

Your device will show a 24-word recovery phrase. Write it on the provided recovery sheet and keep it offline. This phrase is the only way to recover funds if your device is lost.

  • Never store the phrase digitally or take photos.
  • Consider durable metal storage for long-term safety.

Install apps and add accounts

Use Ledger Live's Manager tab to install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you plan to use. After installation, navigate to "Accounts" to add and sync accounts.

  • One Ledger app per coin family (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).
  • Accounts are view-only in Ledger Live until you authorize a transaction with your device.

Security checklist

Before you receive funds, confirm the device firmware and Ledger Live are up to date and that the recovery phrase was generated on the device.

  • Never share your recovery phrase; Ledger employees will never ask for it.
  • Check the device's authenticity screen when prompted.

Quick tips

  • Keep multiple copies of your recovery phrase in geographically separated secure locations.
  • Enable a PIN with sufficient complexity and avoid obvious sequences.
  • Use passphrase (optional) for an extra layer — but treat it like a secret itself.

About recovery & recovery options

The 24-word recovery phrase follows BIP39 standards and can be restored on any compatible hardware or software wallet if needed. A passphrase (sometimes called 25th word) creates an additional hidden account — losing the passphrase usually means losing access, so store it separately from the seed.

When something goes wrong

If your device becomes unresponsive, contact official Ledger support and consult the official knowledge base. For security issues, avoid sharing your seed or passphrase anywhere; support will never request those.
